Vizada Networks connects to Seacom fiber optic cable

High-speed satellite communications service for Tanzania-based corporate customers, including last mile

Oslo, Norway, 14 December 2009 – Vizada Networks, the leading independent satellite communications provider, has signed an agreement through its subsidiary in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to connect to the Seacom submarine fibre optic cable which provides high-capacity bandwidth along the east coast of Africa.

The connection in Dar Es Salaam is now fully operational and enables Vizada Networks to offer a complete high-speed communications service to customers in Tanzania, combining high-bandwidth and low-latency terrestrial fibre with the reliable support of a satellite network.

Vizada Networks is also one of few providers with the capabilities and infrastructure in place to offer communications over the “last mile”, including high-speed WiMax services and cable internet in Dar Es Salaam, and tailored satellite service for rural areas. Typical customers there include companies and businesses, Internet service providers and universities.

“We are excited to enter this new era of technological advancement in Tanzania,” said Lenjore Lekamoi, the head of Vizada Networks Ltd. in Tanzania. “By combining a high-quality and reliable satellite service with a stable last mile network and fibre optic cable we will continue to serve our customers’ capacity needs now and in the future with low price and high-speed connectivity.”

Vizada Networks plans to expand its i-Direct hub in Dar es Salaam in the future to accommodate regional communications traffic. By avoiding routing traffic back to Europe, customers will benefit from lower latency (reduction of 50%), improved voice quality and lower costs.

The Seacom fiber optic network is the first to land in East Africa and was officially launched on 23 July 2009. The 17,000 km route links Eastern and South Africa to India and Europe via landing points in Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Djibouti and Egypt.

Among the main benefits of the cable are substantial improvement in the quality of service, such as higher speed and lower latency in Internet traffic transmission, enormous increase of international bandwidth capacity and significantly lower prices of Internet services. On average, Vizada customers have tripled their capacity for the same monthly costs.
